Before there was Pasteurization...
Before there was pasteurization, healthy people were affected by the germs in raw milk and other things that were consumed. The germs and bacteria greatly affected those with weakened immune systems and other health problems. If there were any germs in anything, they would make people sick to the point of a possible death. Diseases were seen especially when raw milk was involved. The bacteria in raw milk can cause tuberculosis, diphtheria, typhoid fever, and more. In the Wall Street Journal, a report stated "Before 1938, when pasteurization was widely adopted, cow's milk accounted for about 25% of all food- and water-borne disease outbreaks." Before there was pasteurization, foodborne illnesses were common. Also, a lot of juices and milk and other dairy products didn't keep as long. Things would go bad very quickly and it was a lot of money for people to spend to replace their perishable foods.
After there was Pasteurization...
Because diseases were so prevalent before the discovery of pasteurization, it really was a turning point when it came about. Products like milk were everyday things, so this new process saved a lot of lives. One of the most infectious diseases that people got from unpasteurized foods was tuberculosis. By discovering pasteurization, the amount of people with tuberculosis dropped. When it was starting to come out, people just heard that heating milk and other things killed bacteria, making safer to consume, so a lot of them would just heat things at home. Also, things kept longer and had longer "shelf-lives" making products more available to the people that didn't have a lot of money. They could make things last. It saved a lot of people money. With the discovery of pasteurization came a healthy people.
